Academic Achievement and Student Success Indicators
Birmingham-Southern uses a variety of measures to evaluate student success. The four goals most meaningful to prospective students and the public include: course completion rates, student retention rates, graduation rates, and post-baccalaureate success.
Goal 1: Course Completion
- Goal: Persistent enrollment within terms, evidenced through course completion rates.
- Target: Students should complete courses by receiving course credit at a rate of 95%.
- Current Markers: For the twelve terms ending Spring 2023, the median course completion rate was 94.25%; the rate for Spring 2023 was 94.2%.

Goal 2: Retention
- Goal: Consistent enrollment across academic years, evidenced through retention rates.
- Target: Fall-to-fall retention of first-year students should be 85%.
- Current Markers: The median rate for first-time student rates over the last five returning falls has been 78%.

Goal 3: Graduation and Transfer-out Rates
- Goal: Completion of enrollment, evidenced through graduation rates.
- Target: Graduation rates should reach 70% within four years and 75% within six years.
- Current Markers: The four-year graduation rate average after four years is 58%. The most recent four-year graduation rate, from the 2019 cohort, is 60%. The four-year graduation rate average after six years is 68%. The most recent six-year graduation rate, from the 2017 cohort, is 64%.

Goal 4 & 5: Job Placement and Graduate Education
- Goals: Post-baccalaureate educational success, evidenced through placement or admission rates for further education; professional success, evidenced through career placement rates and teaching licensure rates.
- Targets: Continued education post-graduation from Birmingham-Southern should reach 50%; career placement rates within six months of graduation should achieve 40%.
- Current Markers: Since COVID-19, graduates employed or with an employment offer in their field has been slightly below 40%. The most recent group of graduates was employed at a rate of 42% at graduation, but that number does not restrict employment to their major or field of study. Graduates reported continuing education at the graduate or professional school level at a median rate of 37%; the most recent graduates reported that 23% had firm plans to enter graduate or professional school.
